What if your payment barely covers the interest?

Quick lesson1 min read

A small payment can keep a debt alive for a long time. To know whether you are making progress, separate what you pay in interest from what reduces the balance.

An example with numbers

With $1,000 outstanding and a hypothetical monthly rate of 2%, the first month generates $20 of interest. If you pay $30, you pay down $10. If you pay $20, the balance does not fall that month. The example assumes you make no new purchases and pay no fees.

Try it with your numbers

Find the balance, interest, fees and payment on your last statement. Work out how much the debt actually went down.

This calculator is on its way. In the meantime, you can do the calculation on paper or in a spreadsheet.
