Does a 10% raise mean 10% more in your account?

Quick lesson1 min read

To assess an offer, compare the gross annual pay first and then the estimated net annual pay for the same country, tax year and profile. The number of payments a year changes each paycheck and can hide an improvement if you only look at one month.

An example with numbers

An offer of $2,500 gross paid 12 times a year adds up to $30,000. Another of $2,300 paid 14 times adds up to $32,200. Even though the regular paycheck is smaller, the second offers $2,200 more gross a year. The net increase depends on the deductions that apply.

Try it with your numbers

Write down the fixed annual pay of two offers. Set bonuses and benefits aside before comparing the estimated net pay of each.
